Norman Behrendt is a visual artist and photographer based in Berlin. He holds a Master of Arts with distinction from the University of Westminster, London and a BA in Photography and Communication Design of the University of Applied Sciences Potsdam, Germany. Behrendt was a scholarship holder by the DAAD for his Master studies 'Photographic Arts' at the University of Westminster in London in 2017-18.
For his photobook ‘Burning down the house, 2007 – 2012’ Behrendt has been awarded with the first prize at the 6th Fotobook Dummy Award in Kassel and received special acknowledgement at the ‘10th Aenne-Biermann-Prize’ for contemporary German photography in Gera. His work ‘Brave New Turkey’ was nominated for the New Discovery Award at the Rencontres-Arles 2017 and also published in the June 18, 2017 issue of the New York Times Magazine.
Behrendt`s works have been shown in various contexts internationally, e.g. United Kingdom, France, Germany and Belgium amongst others. His work 'Blueprint, 2017-18' was presented as part of the group exhibition 'Probable Lies' at Ambika P3 Gallery, London. Furthermore it was presented at Phillips Headquarters in London and successfully auctioned in 2018.
Behrendt aims to raise critical awareness of the political and social changes of our time. Within this framework, his work exists on the boundaries between documentary and conceptual photography.
His work is held in both national and international public and private collections, including Martin Parr photobook collection, Tate Britain.
